Today is a little different (quite possibly the understatement of the year). Being a blog about reading through the Bible and me honoring my commitment to stay true to that has become very difficult on a day like today. It is Mother’s Day for crying out loud. I would be more than remiss if I didn’t Honor Moms on this day in some way. Don’t worry… God wants us to honor our mothers… Just read on and you will see where He says so…
But it’s Weak! The attempt to honor Mothers and all the strong things they do for us is weak. Weak because our attempt to honor the ladies in our lives that give life, that console us, that kiss boo-boos, pay our way through school, that give us lunch money, that listen to us, that love to get a call from us, that smile at us when we don’t know it, that pick us up when we are down, or that pick us up when we are “downtown” is feeble at best. There is no way to honor these ladies sufficiently for what they do for us. We learn to love from our mothers. We learn God’s gentle caring from our mothers. They know stuff… They know stuff, like how to feed an orphaned puppy, like when to flip a grilled cheese, like where to buy the best ______ .(fill in the blank)
Mothers defy the word comfort zones. They may whip your butt in a grocery store as if you were the only people on the planet and then turn right around, stop traffic in rush hour and pick up a stray dog. They are nurturing by their nature. Their souls are knitted with care and they ooze love. They do what has to be done and don’t mind doing it at the top of their lungs or as silent as a church mouse. They do it. And how do the know what to do? Always amazes me. They know what to do and when to do it and they don’t care who thinks it is wrong! (my definition of Leadership by the way). Mom’s are awesome. God made them that way and they serve as a testament for God’s unrelenting love. They model it and that is Worship. They honor God with their service as mothers and God sees that as worship to Him. After all they are doing the work of that who sent them. (sound familiar?)
God’s Word tells us to Honor our Mother and Fathers…
“Honor your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the Lord your God is giving you. (Exodus 20:12 NIV)
Paul says that this is the first commandment that comes with a promise. The promise that it may go well with you and you live a long. That is because when we listen to them, we gain the knowledge God had imparted to them.
There are several mothers in my life right now that are dealing with honoring their Mother on Mother’s Day for the first time… while their mothers are in Heaven. This Mother’s Day will prove to be a particularly difficult one to say the least. It is on God that I pray the find rest and strength today.
Mothers are amazing. God made them that way and we should celebrate how awesome they are. If your mom has moved on to be closer to God in Heaven you need to realize she is not gone… she has just changed her address. Think of all that she is learning there that she will teach you when you change your address. Your mothers love you no matter where you are or where they are. And think, she when you get to Heaven, she probably won’t need to beat your butt in the grocery store.
Read your Bibles, then do something nice for your Mom today. Honor her in a way that makes God smile. I bet she’ll smile too no matter what her address is.

Beware The Serpent
The soothing tongue is a tree of life,
but a perverse tongue crushes the spirit. (Proverbs 15:4 NIV)
This is where the battle begins. Slithering up that tree. Watching the children of God playing and becoming hungry. Waiting for their weakest point so his work comes easy. Of course I’m talking about the Fall of Man in Genesis, but look where all of this shows up today in our reading.
Saul becomes prideful and thinks because God anointed him King over Israel that he is sufficient to do the work God had given to Samuel. Because of this pride we see that Saul’s army is left with no weapons later as the Lord leaves them. This pride that slithered into Saul’s life because of “his own accomplishments” (Saul forgot that God gave it all to him to start with) God will anoint another. Samuel says a man after His own heart.
The Psalms come alive to bring that home with this:
Is it not you, God, you who have rejected us
and no longer go out with our armies? Give us aid against the enemy,
for human help is worthless. With God we will gain the victory,
and he will trample down our enemies. (Psalm 108:11-13 NIV)
Jesus shows us how to handle pride… Did you notice it in the reading? When His brothers tempt Him with the “power” of becoming “a public figure”, Jesus tells the truth. He says His time has not yet come for that. Of course He is foreshadowing His day in court where He will be executed. That is His “public figure day”. But He answers that temptation of pride by staying true to His purpose. His purpose is God’s purpose. He knows what He is supposed to do and He doesn’t veer right or left from His purpose. He does end up going, but in stark contrast to the way His brothers suggested. He did this on purpose!
Some might say He gave in because He did end up going. I say He stayed true because His purpose was NOT notoriety. His purpose was revelation and fulfillment of prophecy.
Today’s Prayer
As pride comes against me (for it comes against us all), I will come against it by holding on to your purpose for me, Lord. Help me to recognize it quickly Lord and squash it like you did in today’s reading. Give me the strength to fight. You have given me the tools… Ephesians 6:10-19
