Someone Steal Your Name?

4 Reasons to Have Your Very Own Domain Namechipmunk-robot-nuts2

I get asked all the time, “How did you come up with the name MeetTheMcKinneys.com?”  The answer is simple.  I couldn’t get TheMcKinneys.com or even McKinneys.com.  Someone, undoubtedly another McKinney, had already registered it.  Much to my dismay.

Most people think they will never need their own Domain Name or Website Name and just toss the idea of registering it.  I suggest you reconsider.

There are many reasons to reserve your name even if you don’t expect to have a website.

  1. IT’s Easy to Do - You can simply reserve it for less than$10 a year.  From the provider I use 1and1.com, you can register it for less than $7 as of the writing of this post.
  2. Look More Professional - You can forward your domain to any website you want. Forwarding means simply telling 1and1.com that when someone enters yourdomain.com and presses go that they are to be taken to the destination you prescribe.  Why is this helpful?  Check out RyanDMcKinney.com to see.  This lets me put my domain name on the back of my business cards and make some powerful connections.  You can also have your name go to your Facebook Page or Twitter Account.
  3. Lock Out The Competition - Not a Facebooker? Fine you can simply lock out the other “Your Name.coms” out there and keep the from misusing your name.
  4. Your Kids Future Will Require It - Your Kids WILL need this.  In today’s environment kids will be expected to have their own.  Your own virtual Real Estate is not hard to get and there are easy ways to keep it safe.

In reality, it’s not a matter of looking more professional or super hip.  It’s a matter of making it EASY for people to find more about you. Don’t want to be found out?  I get this one all the time too.  Do a google search

for your name , click on the links that are there, and look at the Yahoos that are putting stuff on the web using the same name.  You will be surprised at what is already out there about you.  Of course, it’s not really you, right?  What will a prospective employer think.  Or a date for that matter?  Will they take the time to “get to know you” before they decide to slam the virtual door in your face? NO.  It’s that easy… 1and1.com
